What were the social classes for the city-state Nike?
Government officials
Men
Women
Slaves
The majority of the population is a middle-class citizen, while there are less lower class citizens than rich men. Women were not treated equal to men, but they were kept healthy and well-treated. Most men in Nike are citizens, while women, slaves, and foreigners cannot become citizens. The people captured from war were to become the slaves, and were sold to people to own. The slaves received pay, and could eventually buy their freedom. Having slaves that do the physical labor allows the citizens the time to participate in the government. The philosophy that was used in Nike, stated by the philosopher Aristotle, was that "The man is by nature fitter for command than the female, just as an older person is superior to a younger, more immature person."
